a show foe the ages. a must have in every phishhead's collection!!!
|
Loved these two nights of shows. Hampton is a great venue. It was also one of the many places I saw The Dead before we lost Jerry. They seemed to love this venue as much as Phish. I just wish that there was a Live video version of those 2 great nights of music. Now Living in Texas outside of Austin so I do not get to see many shows. But this was by far one of the greatest sets I ever saw and there where many shows I remember seeing.

Cal,
I thought your last name was Naughton, not Leighton!!
Oh, & one more thing: I remember you wailing "I'm runnnnnning from yoooooo!!" (BBFCFM) after that good ol' 10-car accident on our home track.
Anyways, Phish doesn't just pee excellence; they show you how encyclopedic they can be musically (ambient, funk, shoegazer, calypso, rock, bluegrass, blues, R&B, reggae, oh yes - even post-punk & punk).
Now I'm back in the repair shop cranking up that Son Seals tune you always wanted to hear!! Yes, that one...

to ricky bobby,
Come on man!! I was tearing up the track @ Talladega going 500 mph playing Wilson > BBFCFM - crashed into about 10 cars as a result (jean girard included)...What were you thinking when you left those two killer tunes out of your review?
anyways, I'm cracking open a can of Busch Beer & turning HCA up out loud for you Ricky!!

Simple is where it's at inthese shows. Ambient layering, textural noodling, and great interplay between band members. Exquisite!

HCA is one of Phish's phinest high points from 1997-1999.
They don't have YEM, you say? No Tweezer? Reba? DWD? Aw well, this box set, even without all those marathon jamming vehicles I just mentioned, does pack plenty of phirepower nonetheless with Tube, BG > Piper, HH, Mike's Groove...HCA is for the diehard Phish phan who loves jam bands which aren't afraid to take risks & surprise plenty of folks along the way!! (Phish is definitely a band which loves adventure.)

This 1998 box set was my first exposure to Phish. Attracted to the lure of twisting notes, melodic rifts, and the ever present hoots and hollers from phans enjoying this splediferous performance, I was reeled aboard before I even knew I was hooked. 2 years later, my canoe tipped over and my entire CD collection was lost into the depths of the Saco river. I just downloaded this show, and took a 5 hour stroll down my musical memory lane. My head bobbed to the beats that percolated my auditory system 10 years ago. I like to think of the band as expert anglers with infinite tools and tricks in their tackle box of tunes. If you listen to Hampton Comes Alive, you will undoubtedly catch Phish Phever... or rather, the band will have hooked another keeper. Enjoy!

Great sounding live shows. Musically tight and real fun! Very interesting setlists with some bust-outs here and there. But no epic jams on this one, but a perfect alternative for people who do not really dig the 30 min. jams...
