i just have to say as someone whose first show wasn't until July 99, and then listening to every show before '99 that I could ever get my hands on, and as a pro musician in Los Angeles, these guys put in the rehearsal time and it shows and i love it. Couldn't have picked a better first show opening song to make the statement i was hoping for. i'm not a drummer but i'm leaning towards saying Fish is the most solid player right now too. he was right on the first night...truly the solid foundation that allows all 4 guys to be Phish out there. its always been obvious, especially now, that trey knew fishman was the guy, just from hearing him drum, probably decided he was the guy while he was still in the hallway approaching the dorm room.

It is so good to have you back.....I've missed you! The shows sounds awesome, hope you will make it out west soon. Thanks for all the joy you bring me!

I've been listening to Phish pretty consistently for the past 12 years. I have to say that The last time I saw Phish I was disappointed. Didn't get to go to these shows but was pleasantly surprised when I heard them. Thanks for making them available for free. Definitely some great stuff in these two shows. It seems like Trey has bounced back nicely and is giving this comeback a genuine effort. I think his vocals are better than I can remember. Hope to see more like this on Summer tour!!! Spread the vibe!

Having read the NYT article and listened to most of these first 2 shows, I am excited about the future of the band. Some things are not surprising: Mike is still the best bass player in music, the commitment to the audio/visual live experience still sets the industry standard, and Trey still makes some compositional flubs (although knowing they are sober flubs during marathon shows somehow makes me care a whole lot less than when it felt like he was dialing it in).

These shows must have been epic in person, but they won't go down in history as shows to collect and listen to repeatedly. Neither were the post-hiatus shows, which were followed up by a sick spring tour. It would have miraculous for them to rehearse a few weeks and drop back into golden hose form. I think the long shows were planned on purpose, knowing that expectations are crazy and the likelihood of busting out classic improv marginal. So, they found another way of giving the fans in Hampton a glorious experience, while signaling that they are most emphatically NOT dialing it in this time. I hope they can sustain the energy and commitment that reestablishing anything approximately like their peak will require.

So what about those West Coast dates???
