6/10/2009 Thompson-Boling Arena, Knoxville, TN

   Agreed!  (10/7/2009 10:36:34 AM)

This was the sleeper show of Part I of the summer tour. Incredibly strong opening, although it may not look that way on paper. The Jim>PYITE was super high energy, and the boys definitely played a much cleaner show than Asheville the night before. Undermind was a real treat, and the Mike's Groove>Coil>Character Zero to end the FIRST set blew our section of the audience away. I think the band really enjoyed the two intimate settings that the indoor arenas in Asheville and Knoxville provided. There was alot of interplay between the band and the crowd behind the stage(where I was, just behind Page). We actually were treated to a "behind the stage" focused light-rig during the ambient jam in Waves, which I was really happy to see busted out for the first time since the reunion. Waves>ASIHTOS>Bowie was an awesome trio, the Reba was excellent. Most of the intricate sections of the more technically demanding tunes were pulled off without a hitch, and both Page and Mike sounded great in the mix and played extremely well. I didn't know that it had been nearly 10 years since the last Hello My Baby, but it set the crowd on fire, and Trey was back on his guitar starting up Julius before the rest of the band had even gotten back to their instruments. Hood>Cavern closer was really sweet, and then we headed to a weekend of insanity at Bonnaroo. Asheville and Knoxville were both a lot of fun, thanks to the venues, but Knoxville definitely was one of the better shows of Part I, so if you haven't had a chance to check it out, give it a download and you'll see.

I agree Dravidian. I think they played an amazing show in Knoxville!! I loved the set list and I don't have any complaints as far as the way it was played!! I'm also really thankful that it was made available for us to download the very night it was recorded. I can also get over any flaws the recording may have. We're all really lucky that they do this for us and I dig YOUR optimism.

I'm gonna go ahead and say this is the gem of the first leg of this summer. Any thoughts?

I read a review that the sound was horrible, but must disagree. Yes it is not a perfect soundboard show, but as someone who was not able to see any of this summer's shows I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this show, so tight and so much energy, WOW!!!! I prefer sounboard and better sound, but this recording does capture more atmoshpere than a sterile soundboard. Some people focus on the negative and not the positive, its up to you......

Sound is awful  (8/29/2009 5:44:41 AM)

I don't know what Gary is doing during the first half of the tour, but this show has sound changes that are so 180 it totally ruins the show. Sound from first set to second set goes from a 5-6 to a 0. His mixing in of audience mics to the soundboard mix on the fly has ruined the whole first half of tour. He clearly shows an inability to perform this task, and why he is mixing audience mics into the soundboard on the fly is a mystery to me. We are paying for soundboards, not a crappy matrix mix that isn't even done well at all, and the mic/soundboard mix varies throughout the show, and it isn't subtle either. This is one of the worst examples of Gary's ability to ruin these releases, but you can download any of the first leg of tour and hear a terrible mix by Gary.

Such a pity to have these great shows sound so bad because of Gary Brown.

knoxville was the heat  (8/27/2009 9:01:07 PM)

my thouhgts on knoxville is that this was a kick ass indoor arena phish show. FWIW, IMHO this was the best all around top to bottom show of the tour. Every song was flawless, tight, and executed at a level far beyond what i expected for this band after a 5 year break. The scene in that arena was second to none and i hope they come back to knoxville again. The lights and sound inside that place was the best i have ever heard/seen in perhaps all the shows i've seen since 95. Listening to the crowd go absolutely nuts after "Undermind" > "mike's Groove" is worth the download alone. I'd love to see this show released on dvd or remastered in 5.1 surround sound.

My favorite song for this show was Weekapaug Groove. Mike rips some bass in the begginning and the second half of his intro he does some sick rolll. And the jam they do is soo sick. They start soft, then get reallly funky when page switches sounds. And trey's guitar work is simply incredible. Thoughts?

This show was sweet! First set to encore I recommend this show to anyone who enjoys jammin'. For my first experience with Phish I could not have asked for more. The atmosphere was eclectic and good vibes were all around. The boys are back and in a new phunky way! See ya'll at Chicago and Buffalo. Peace, love, and happiness.
P.S. Its the 40th aniversary of Woodstock this month.... Lets pay hommage to those that have paved the way for modern music today.
