DC Smith,
Were you even at the Alpine shows?! To say that Deer Creek destroys both Alpine shows illustrates a lot of ignorance on your part. Deer Creek was great, don't get me wrong. I loved Fluffhead as the set closer and Tweezer was awesome with the lightning flashing everywhere. I even had to make the long walk back to the camp site through the pouring rain. However, the Alpine shows were just a little bit better. First of all, Alpine is a way better venue than Deer Creek specifically because of tailgating and the amount of people that can fit into Alpine. As for the actual shows, a lot of deep cuts at Alpine that they simply just did not play at Deer Creek (e.g. The Lizards, Makisupa Policeman, The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday, Brother, etc.) All the shows were great, but if we are going to compare, Alpine has the edge. All these shows were better than the Chicago show by the way. Can't wait for Phish 8 in Cali!!

6-19 Creek simply destroys both Alpines, having listened to them all several times through.
Sorry but it's true...Alpine night 2 Set II was OK, but the Creek show belonged on the second leg with all the other sickies :)
And it's disappointing when they jam YEM into another song rather than jam it out (that's twice in a row now first night Alpine w/ a disappointingly truncated YEM).
Next time three nights in Noblesville and skip Alpine IMO; the shows and the vibes would be improved. :)
Or bonner springs (another WAY better venue).
Good shows though...I just don't understand why ppl love Alpine so much, I think it's the worst ampitheater in the entire country.

WTF, I totally agree with you about 2-28-03...that is an outstanding show from '03. That BOTT is one of my favorite jams to listen to, nevermind the era.

I wasn't looking at the lawn, boys. I was enjoying the music and loved the fact that Grandpa was at the show, mike's, or AKA "cactus".
|
The lawn is awesome, actually the best, I think. You just have to get out there around 7.
|
I spent the whole show in the lawn at Alpine and had a fucking blast! So stop complaining about the lawn, its not bad at all.

I will start off by saying that the lawn at alpine valley is horrible, and that is, unfortunately, where i was for this show. I spent the first couple of songs looking for a spot where i could both hear the music and not have some screaming drunk kid trying to tell me i should get him and his army of friends high. i guess some people just don't want to listen to stash....
anyway, i did get a some what decent spot for bt gin. This is one of my favorites and they played it well. personally, I would like to see this song get back into the second set rotation and have the boys really cut loose on this one. Either way, this was a really strong version worth checking out.
kill devil falls was alright. It kind of sounds like a watered down version of chalk dust torture, but hell, what are you going to do? farm house and sparkle don't do much for me, but once again, what are you going to do? sit and wait for.....antelope. Since 1995, they had played antelope at deer creek every year, but alas, it was not to be this year. They made us wait an extra day, but they made it worth the wait. I couldn't hear punch-stash that well, but I am going to go out on a limb hear and say this was the first set highlight.
Waves doesn't do much for me, but i had never seen it live. It wasn't quite as drab as i had thought, but it will probably never be one i am dieing to see. once again, sample doesn't do much for me but trey seemed really fired up on this version. If you are a sample fan, this is a good one.
this show really starts to turn the corner at maze. page buried his solo. hell, even in this massive lawn you could really feel that maze solo. very good. they cool things down with a little makisupa. it was good to hear trey being able to joke about some of his "misadventures." they followed this with a very solid ghost. kind of the theme for the weekend, they did not stretch this out very far, but they played it very well. This ghost was of the darker variety, which is just the way i like it. out of the dark/funk jam of ghost came a nice uppity lizards. pretty standard lizards, so you know, it was very good. you enjoy myself was well executed, and they pulled my favorite yem move, jam into another song and drop the vocal jam. Nicu really came out of left field, and it was a very welcome surprise. the transition from yem to nicu was also very well executed.
whether you are an old fan or a new fan, well, you have probably seen phish kill some good momentum. they sure did tonight. the caspian, waste pairing was kind of a bummer. i guess some like caspian, but i am most certainly not one of them. fire was cool. i'm not a big zero fan, but this seemed to fit well.

Just do not bring children to phish shows. There are reports of a guy inside these shows heavily dosing the young kids.
