Worst mix ever  (7/24/2009 8:52:42 AM)

The whole tour is the worst sounding load of junk mixed by Mr. Brown I have had the misfortune to listen to, and let alone purchase. This stuff needs to improve on second leg, and for those of you who prepurchased the whole tour, you were taken for a giant ride and got ripped off.

It's amazing how bad these are. But when you go back, they sound like Gary's mix for the Trey solo stuff. I don't think he is that good, and from the first leg of tour, he gets a D- from me. Can't get much worse than what he has done to these shows. Sounds like I am listening to the music through 10 feet of concrete with tin cans over my ears. Oh yeah, that's just that POS Digidesign Venue board he uses and the sound it is producing. Hope you can get a hold on the mix Gary and work this stuff out, you are ruining some damn fine shows with your mix.

BUYER BEWARE.

So I've been up all night listening to recent shows and similar songs from the past. The boys are playing great. The problem as everyone may already know is the mix. However, I think the problem is not the mix but the power amplification is just not there. The mix is not too bad. The power sounds like it's at 30%. This would also account for the lack of punchy crisp low end and just overall low quality sound production. The sound at the shows lacked power and so do the recordings that is consistent throughout. Hope to see some improvements there. Thanks guys.....and long live cactus!

well, this was the last night of my 4 night run, and they started things off with a song i was dieing to hear all week, my first brother! They did not stretch it out too far, but they played it very well. It was nice to see the kids back stage. It gives me hope that the "backstage phish scene" is much more positive, and that some of the heavier drugs that plagued the band before may have be eradicated.

the wolfman's brother kept the energy going. it is hard to say if the burgettestown version was better; they were both pretty darn solid. funky bitch kept fans moving. like brother, they did not stretch this one out too far, but it was played well. Next up was a tremendous divided sky. This was our first taste of serious phish jamming. Trey was right on, and the rest of the band played superbly on this tune.

I'm not too sure about joy. It seemed to not really fit into what they had going, but hell, at this point, i needed to take a leak anyway. Gbott was solid, but nothing to write home about. taste and poor heart really brought the crowd back around before the boys dropped into the horse>silent. This was played well. Then we got the second real treat of the night with tmwsiy>ave>tmwsiy. tmwsiy was played well, and avenu, as always, rocked the house. My jewish travel companions were loving it, as we were all forgiven for our sins.... i guess. This was my first time to hear time turns elastic, and i certainly liked the live version better than the studio track i heard. This song does seem like it is a little disjointed, for lack of a better term. there are parts of it that i really really like and there are parts that don't really do a lot for me. i will have to listen to it more and see how it grows on me. Either way, i was pretty damn certain i would be seeing this song , so i was happy to see it in the first set as opposed to the middle of the second set.

now the second set started in real style. cross eyed whipped this crowd into a full on frenzy. While this is not the "best" version you can acquire, it was still played well, and it was one of the top 3 jams i saw in my four shows this week. after rocking the cross eyed jam for about 10 minutes, they spaced out until gordo stepped up for DwD. This one was much more exploratory than the burgettestown version. Don't let the 13 minutes fool you; they packed some real action in those 13 minutes. then they petered out into one of my least favorite phish songs, bug. This song bores me, and this version did nothing to change my mind. Piper got things going again, and this was a real rocker. Gordo and fish held down the bottom while trey and page played with a ton of energy. this piper really shined, then they did me in again with another song on my "i don't really want to see this list." they closed the set in style with a very standar/to the point boogie on that dropped into a good solid slave to the traffic light. Trey really soared on his solo, closing the set of the first leg in style.

I would have liked to have seen a longer encore, but hell, it can't be alpine 99 every year. grind is a really cool/funny song, in my opinion, and i shall never gripe about frankenstein.

all in all, it is good to see the boys back. They are not taking songs as far out as i/we are accustomed, but they are playing their songs very sharply. I saw vey few flubs, and they do not seem to be daunted by playing some of their more ambitious/technically demanding tunes, eg fluff head. See you cats next round.

I agree completely! Newbie or old school fan... we all are going to have to accept the new SBD guy and the quality mix he throws on that digi board. Paul Languedoc is not walking through the door for the second leg.

Right on fireclay, I went to my first show in '99 at age 14. And like you said, I am different, and their music is different. We all change, we just need to be open to it and not grasp on to the past so hard that we miss the amazingness happening before us in the present. If nothing changed, how boring would that be? I love the original Phans like yourself that also realize that. Mahalo for your openess.

crusty, geriatric tour rats with hearing aids in both ears and piss poor attitudes who think that they are god's gift to phish make me laugh.
