Relax guys. It's ALL good. Every bit of it. There's so much of what Phish has to offer to choose from now that there's more room in the storage locker than there ever was for different tastes and perceptions to find joy in it ALL. I personally don't care if it's Forbin, Wolfman's, Tela, Light, Possum, F-ckerpants or show of Life...the look of wonder on a newby's face when they're at their first show and that one song...that ONE...that finally CLICKS it for them in their mind...that shart is priceless, because we can ALL remember that moment at our first show and the look on our own faces must've been ridonkulous. And yes, someone was looking at you going "haha, look at that dude...he's fershnizzled and has no idea what's going on." Let the debate continue but don't resent and don't expect people to repent. 17 years of shows and I've STILL only got $0.02 to offer...no more...and so don't we all. Don't blow that $0.02 on discord. It's better spent on strengthening the community. <3

You misinterpreted the entire meaning of what I said... I wasn't knockin on people who call Phish fans "phans," I was talking about how the person who degraded new fans, and said it's sad how younger fans don't know the older music. Yeah, it is sad, but they will learn to love it just like I did.
|
I actually use the name true phan, and i'm only 18 and been seeing them since 09 (not much i can do) and i use the name because i am a true ass fan who loves phish.... so that's not entirely true. Not hating on you or anything but I was just letting you know.

I hate people that come on here and call themselves "true fans" because they are old enough to know Phish from the 80's and early 90's. Don't get me wrong, I have been seeing Phish since 98, and by the way, to the guy who left a long comment, there is no "real" way a jam song should be played . Yeah, most of us know how the song usually sounds, but the band changes each song every time it's played live.
Another thing, the band is changing with the years. If you're not down with anything from Joy or even new stuff they are playing now, then don't call yourself a true fan. A "real" fan will love anything that the band wants to do on stage. Those guys are putting their heart and souls into their music, so to not appreciate it is just a disgrace.
Phish has definitely changed since I first saw them live, but that won't stop me from continuing to go out of my way to see them, and love their performances. Like it or not, Phish is going to continue to write new music, so you can either love it like the rest of the fans, or stick to the past and pick a new band in the present. New fans are what keep the bands music alive in the future, look at the Grateful Dead. So don't hate the young fans who maybe aren't as familiar with Phish's work as I, or anyone else is. Rather, let them do their thing, and give them a chance to fall in love with the music you and I came to be with.

I think you all spend too much time paying attention to and thinking about what the people around you are doing, and not enough time paying attention to the music.
Watkins was great! Not a big fan of the 1st and 2nd Saturday sets, but the 3rd set is MONEY. Great Golden Age! Loved the Secret Set too.
All in all, I'm loving what they're doing right now. They're getting tighter and tighter, and the fact that they are sober right now hopefully means they'll be able to keep rocking for a long time to come.

Arguing on the internet is about as fundamentally idiotic and lame as those people who bought into whats-his-fuck's end of the world thing recently...
However, I must say one thing.... I was severely disheartened at Darien lake to see all these kids stand stone-still when Nellie Cane started, not flipping out over Buffalo Bill, but then fucking BURST with excitement when Kill Devil Falls came out. That was sad. If you had an accident and became deaf and were viewing the show, you'd have thought they were starting Gamehendge or something.
And then to hear kids talking about "OMG this is such a sick jam!" during Whats The Use? was equally a let-down. But rest-assured, they riled themselves up good for Number Line (which IS a great song). And then to hear this other kid exclaim "FINALLY, this is what they should do more of!" when they started GTBT was just....
I was the one standing still during GTBT because I had exhausted myself from dancing my balls off to RAGING fucking AWESOME Phish, while everyone else was talking, hitting on girls, trying to score drugs, or being a general douche bag during that mind-melting Theme->WTU? and the badass Mikes->FEFY->'paug. And then for them all to wake up and flip for GTBT? That was disappointing.
So... I don't know. We're never going to be rid of those who claim that a 2011 version of Sample In A Jar is the best version ever, or those who say that 6/1/11 is the best show Phish ever played.
We need to educate the youngsters, those who don't know that the band hasn't played a real Ghost since 2000, or the proper ending to Mike's Song, or the real arrangement of Jibboo... or those who don't know that the 12/16/99 Tweezer exists, or those that don't know that there's supposed to be a sweet snappy Trey solo after "we've got bebop in the band" or that Drowned and Crosseyed were seen only once a year, or that a real Piper should take at least 2-3 minutes to get to the vocal FADE-IN, and that it didn't used to be so cookie-cutter with its arrangement now of 8 bars intro->verse 8 times->4 bars bridge->verse 8 times->red red worm shout 4 times->Trey high note->4 minutes of jam, let alone knowing that Piper actually has an ending.......
It can be depressing to think about how much is missing from when they were jedi's, but.... put on the Miami Sand, the MSG Ghost, the Utica Have Mercy, or the Albany Seven Below. They CAN and ARE still doing great stuff, they just aren't living 100% for Phish anymore, so we're not likely to get another 7/4/00 Jibboo, 12/7/99 Halley's, 12/30/95 Hood, or 12/31/98 Mike's Song....

The fans have designated 3 separate versions of Phish to differentiate between stages of this ever-changing and evolving band. 1.0, 2.0, 3.0. Most fans embrace this evolution of Phish's music and its members. Change isn't bad. It's just different. Only like up until '98? Whether you're kidding in your review or not, just know that the definition of a true fan is one who loves and appreciates everything a band does, no matter when or where or how. Super Ball Day 2 rocked. And I will continue to enjoy Phish as a whole experience—the music, the fans, the goofs, the flubs, the antics—and hope that they never stop playing.
