Show Notes
On August 12, 1998 Phish played outdoors at Vernon Downs – a harness racetrack in the town of Vernon, NY. This was the last regular show of 23 U.S. dates leading up to Lemonwheel, a tour dubbed the Summer Of Covers due to near-nightly bustouts of new cover songs. It was Phish’s only Vernon show and a homecoming for Jon Fishman, who grew up in nearby Syracuse. Vernon’s general admission, open field set the stage for a pre-festival barnburner.
Among set I highlights were the La Grange > Makisupa Policeman > Funky Bitch opening sequence, Possum dedicated to Jeff Holdsworth, and a transcendent Ramble On > Slave To The Traffic Light set closer. Set II was a set-long Mike’s Groove, from a potent Mike’s Song > Simple > Rift through a fiery Loving Cup > Sleeping Monkey > Weekapaug Groove. The Encore featured summer’s last new cover - Phish’s only Burning Down The House (sung as “Vernon Down the House”) followed by You Enjoy Myself at Fish’s request. All in all this was an old-school, rowdy rocker with some serious jams throughout.
8/12/98 Vernon was recorded by Paul Languedoc to 2-track soundboard DAT and mastered by Fred Kevorkian. The show is available 2/13/18 via: the LivePhish+ App and as MP3, FLAC and FLAC HD downloads at LivePhish.com.

"There have been a lot of great ones but this might be my all time favorite!! I just remember being stuck in traffic from the highway to the show lot, running into the show hearing ZZ Top in the distance!! It was so hectic and energetic and the boys were on one that day!! Finally found a spot and blazed one to roggae and it was purely magical. The sun going down to ramble on!! I still get goose bumps hearing it to this day 2026!! Shout out to JD, JD high school!!"

"This 2nd set is magical. Sir, Page McConnell closing us out. In my opinion in a 2nd set Phish show, is in its’ entirety , with a solo piano to close. Never will forget McNichols Arena in Denver 98’; right before they did Dark Side in Utah. Page soloing for more than 10 minutes on grand piano; with a white stage light cast over him and those ivory keys. That’s how the show ended, and while walking back to Shane’s VW bus the pigs where spot lighting us to conclude a 2nd Phish concert for my 18 yo self; recent Ohio transplant to the mile high city. Wouldn’t see Phish again till 2022. Will always regret show #3 wasn’t Utah! Just 1 more drink from your Loving Cup"
