Show Notes

- On December 16, 1999, near the end of the road to Big Cypress, Phish played their only show at Reynolds Coliseum - a World War II era basketball arena on the NCSU campus with a concert capacity of about 14,000.  Highlights from set I included Chalk Dust Torture, Limb By Limb, Roggae and Possum.  Set II featured some deep-space millennial exploration during Sand and Wading In The Velvet Sea > Tweezer > Runaway Jim.  This show showcased the subtlety of communication and breadth of improvisation for which Phish was, by this time, world-renowned.  12/16/99 was recorded by Paul Languedoc to digital multitrack, mixed/mastered by Jon Altschiller, and represents the first fall 1999 show released by JEMP and LivePhish.

"Anyone here recall sneaking into this show via an air conditioning unit and a garden hose tied to a radiator?? True story.. no ticket, so I walked around the stadium looking for a weak spot. Came across a likeminded cohort plotting in some bushes under a first floor window with a large AC unit. Above, there was an open window to the hall around the stadium. Someone found a hose and managed to scale the wall above the AC and tie it to a radiator inside. One by one, we helped each other get onto the AC unit, wait for the ok from above, and pull ourselves up through the window with the hose. When it was my turn, I got on top of the AC, but the coast wasn’t clear so I had to wait.. just then, flashlights below, cops yelling at everyone to freeze. They scatter. I’m alone, 10 feet above the ground, back against the wall, heart pounding.. clutching the hose and waiting for the all clear. Out of time, I pulled myself up, dove through the window and sprinted down the hall to cheers from all who witnessed. Walked in to the SICKEST chalk dust ever as I recall.. and I just now listened to it for the first time since that night, was not wrong. Can’t I live while I’m young?! Hell yes. ps.. only show I ever snuck into, please don’t judge ;) "

"Mount Rushmore version of Sand right here. 2nd best all-time after Big Cypress. This whole show is perfection."
