Show Notes
On December 2, 1999, Phish played The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, MI, a modern 23,000 seat basketball arena that was home to the Detroit Pistons. Phish made the most of this venue, squeezing in four plays at The Palace between 1995 and 1999 before it was demolished in 2020. The Palace was opening night of the 14-show December tour and the excitement was palpable.
The Runaway Jim opener lit things up from the top of set I, followed by Farmhouse, a dramatic Roggae that was also woven into Run Like An Antelope, with a formidable Free to follow. Set II began with a nod to Detroit local Stevie Wonder with Boogie On Reggae Woman and the show blasted off with the deep millennial dance grooves and alien interface of the centerpiece Bathtub Gin > 2001 > You Enjoy Myself. This unique YEM included a silent jam as well as bits of Detroiter Alice Cooper’s I’m Eighteen, and The Little Drummer Boy. The Bold As Love encore sent the crowd into the December night brimming with excitement about this mini-tour leading up to Hampton, and ultimately Big Cypress.
Auburn Hills ’99 was recorded by Paul Languedoc to DAT and was mastered by Fred Kevorkian.
